Oscar Sunday
February 24th, 2008
Super Bowl parties are a thing of the past. This Sunday belongs to Hollywood. Starting at 6:00 P.M. on E! – The Red Carpet Countdown begins. Here’s the skinny on who’s up for the biggies so you can place your bets.
-Best Actor – George Clooney for Michael Clayton, Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd, Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will be Blood, Viggo Mortensen for Eastern Promises, and Tommy Lee Jones for In the Valley of Ellah.
-Best Actress – Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth, Julie Christie for Away from Her, Marion Cotillard for La Vie en Rose, Laura Linney for The Savages, and Ellen Page for Juno.
-Best Supporting Actor – Tom Wilkinson for Michael Clayton, Hal Holbrook for Into the Wild, Philip Seymour Hoffman for Charlie Wilson’s War, Javier Bardem for No Country for Old Men, and Casey Affleck for The Assassination of Jesse James.
-Best Supporting Actress – Ruby Dee for American Gangster, Amy Ryan for Gone Baby Gone, Tilda Swinton for Michael Clayton, Cate Blanchett for I’m Not There, and Saoirse Ronan for Atonement.
-Best Picture – Atonement, Juno, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men, and There Will be Blood
No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood top out the pack with eight nominations. Atonement and Michael Clayton follow with seven. See the whole list here.
For my part, I have to say that Atonement was phenomenal (and followed the book quite closely) so I’m picking that as a favorite, but I might be rooting for the underdog here as the Cohen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men is getting all the hype. My prediction that does align with the critics is Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor. This is the toughest Best Actor line-up I’ve seen in many, many years. Hollywood (and everyone else) loves George Clooney. Johnny Depp was brilliant and proved he really CAN do everything in Sweeney Todd…it’s a tough call and I’ll be honest and say I haven’t seen There Will be Blood yet, BUT all this being said…it’s Daniel Day-Lewis. How could anyone possibly beat Daniel Day-Lewis?
The show’s at 8:00 on ABC – Jon Stewart’s hosting again and if you’re for some unholy reason considering missing it this year, I have five words for you that prove the Super Bowl has got nothing on the Oscars: Johnny Depp in a tux. Is it Sunday yet?
