The Pros and Cons of Weddingbook
February 24th, 2008
Perhaps your first question may be, “What is Weddingbook?” in which case I envy you, but nevertheless I will explain. Weddingbook is an extension of Facebook which allows everyone to follow the progress of the average Bridezilla’s wedding planning. Using the site allows you to view the Bride’s [sic] wedding party and their respective profiles, get constant updates on the decision-making process, and keep up on all of the slightest details from the color of the invitations to the size of the reception. There’s even a wedding countdown clock that lets you know, day by day, how close you are to that special moment.
Now, let me just note that for the purposes of this article Weddingbook is a symbol for all similar applications of the modern technological age and you may take this article as an ‘insert-your-(least)favorite-wedding-announcement-innovation’ here sort of deal. So, apart from the obvious obnoxiousness of Weddingbook, why is it becoming a source of debate between girlfriends?
Here’s the argument as I have encountered it: You’re either A) Bride or member of bridal party, eager to brag and fawn over all things wedding-like OR you’re B) the “friend” of the Bride who finds out via Facebook that her Bride-pal is getting married. This Bride determined that rather than notify said friend of her impending most important day with a quick call or note (even an e-mail or text!), she simply changes her Facebook status. Heck, Weddingbook even encourages Brides that this is the way to go, exclaiming on their main page that one of the benefits of the application is that you get to “Announce your Engagement on Facebook!” You get a wedding wall and a wedding website and you can advertise your guest list for the world to see!
So here’s my position: I get it. I get wanting to show off all your big day plans and not being able to include everyone in your momentous declaration, but Brides beware. When you make it a point to tell all you’ve decide to spend the rest of your life with Mr. Wonderful through an egotistical website instead of showing your friends the courtesy of a call and THEN you expect those same friends to monitor and care about your every cake and dress whim – you better hope those friends love you more than you love them, because last time I checked, getting married didn’t give you the right to drop your friends like they’re hot. My apologies to the few Brides who manage to keep their integrity, their sanity, and their friends – you have my respect. Chicks before dicks.
And best wishes!
