A Woman in the White House?
February 25th, 2008
I’m going to attempt journalistic professionalism and therefore do not intend to endorse anyone in this article, rather I mean to explore the idea of a woman, any woman, taking the reins on Pennsylvania Ave, but feel free to weigh in with your own political preferences after I’m done.
The arguments I’ve been hearing these days are troubling mostly because they usually start something like this: “I’m not voting for her because I don’t like her. She’s a bitch.” This would be the point in the conversation when my head explodes. I’m an avid news-watcher and follower of this year’s race and though I could talk about the positives in both Democratic nominees all day, I find it troubling that racism has frequently been a topic of critics, but sexism has not. For the record, “bitch” is not a politically correct thing to call a woman. And the feminist implications that come with using that word against females who happens to display strength in a position of power…well, they’re unacceptable. Not to mention the media frenzy and ratings boost that happened when the candidate cried on national TV. Or when one journalist noted that her daughter was being “whored out.” Someone needs to be examining these situations and their offensive reflection on the political climate.
Still, I can’t help but feel a certain surge of pride when I note that a woman and a black man are duking it out for the top spot. I mean, this is ginormous in its significance and it’s just really, really cool no matter what gender or race you are. So I guess like anything else this moment in history has its highs and lows. And big changes are in store no matter who wins the nomination, which is a good sign for the next four years. Keep your eyes on the polls…
